I broke my other dreamcast please help - Gromber - 05.05.2012 00:33

i wanted to remplace the original bios with a pre-flashed rom.

I can´t do it work on a ntsc-u va1 (black sport), i tried two times, with different pre-flashed roms... I am afraid that I have broken my motherboard (some welded track) when i extract one of them, please help.

I use the image

of this tutorial http://www.mmmonkey.co.uk/console/images/sega/link83bios/44.jpgthis tutorial

Can someone give me some advice or new pics.
There are alternative points to use with some legs of the bios?

A dreamcast less in the world...

Gromber
Can you upload some pictures of your bios mod?

It is no different, just you do not need a second resistor and a switch, and everything else the same way.

any idea?

I think it's correct that you only need pin 1 (#RESET) and pin 44 (#WE) to be lifted as long as the chip is definitely pre-flashed.

Pin 1 can then be tied to VCC (3V3) pin 23, and pin 44 connected to pin 9 of the FlashROM.

@Gromber - What did you mean by "welded track"? Has a track or via lifted from the board? If so, which one?

You need to make sure that none of the pins are shorted to each other.
If you check with a multimeter, it's fairly easy to test between one pin and it's neighbour like this...

1+2...
2+3...
3+4... etc.

This must be done with the power OFF! (multimeter set to continuity / "diode" / "beep" setting).

Note that pins 32 and 33 will probably both be connected to ground, so they will test as shorted to each-other (this is normal).

Also, is that just flux across pins 3+4 of IC502 ("Flash")?

A very good tip is to use liquid flux when soldering...

I use a flux in a syringe. You can put quite a lot of flux across all the pins, then touch the soldering iron on each pin again.

The solder on the pins should flow very easily, just don't leave the iron on one pin for more than a few seconds (the flux will "boil off" after a while).

btw, let us know which pin / pad you think is broken. I could probably find an alternative solder point for you.

OzOnE.

@OzOnE (and all other people who can help!)

I desoldered my dreamcast BIOS chip perfectly and IT happened. One (the only one) of my solder points broke down and vanished into thin air. I've made a picture of course. It would be nice if one of you great people could try to find an alternative solder point. I've already destroyed a dreamcast before trying this bios replacement mod. Sad

Anyway here is the picture. The broken point is near point 23 and marked by me. I think the point is called "Q12" or "25" on the replacement bios.

Thank you really much for your time and help and reading this. I appreciate it!

Cheers

you are LUCKY! this pin is NC (not connected)...
