do you just put the DS folder on the card, or is a file needed in the root?

Yes, just put DS folder on the SD card (or HDD).

It's not matter, DS can boot from folder or root of device.
Folder just more convenient.

thanks - will post foto's when i'm done - i'm trying to make the cleanest and most compact conversion seen.
it takes a long time because every time i need something, i have to get it from china
